Experience Laos Through Its Festivals: August–November 2025 with Sanctuary Hotels & Resorts
A seasonal journey with Sanctuary Hotels & Resorts
Laos is a country deeply rooted in tradition, where spiritual rhythms and community gatherings shape the calendar year. From racing boats on sacred rivers to floating candle-lit offerings under a full moon, the second half of 2025 invites travellers to witness and take part in some of the country’s most cherished festivals.
At Sanctuary Hotels & Resorts, we offer you more than a place to stay — we offer a front-row seat to Laos’ cultural soul.

23 August – Boat Racing Festival in Luang Prabang
Every year, the Nam Khan River in Luang Prabang transforms into a bustling festival stage. Dozens of long, narrow racing boats—handcrafted and manned by local teams—compete in high-energy races. Along the riverbanks, the air is filled with drumming, cheering, and music, while food stalls and community parades create a carnival-like atmosphere.
More than a sporting event, this festival marks the end of the Buddhist Lent in rural communities and pays tribute to water spirits, essential to life in Laos.
Where to stay:
Sanctuary Luang Prabang Hotel – perfectly situated for experiencing the races and riverside festivities.
8 October – Boun Ok Phansa & Festival of Lights (Luang Prabang)
Boun Ok Phansa marks the official end of the Buddhist Lent, a three-month period of spiritual retreat for monks. In Luang Prabang, this sacred day culminates in a breathtaking display of devotion and beauty.
At nightfall, residents place floating offerings—called kratong—into the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. These boats, made from banana leaves and adorned with candles and flowers, carry away misfortunes and symbolize new beginnings. Temples are lit with glowing lanterns, and the entire old town bathes in a magical golden light.
Where to stay:
Sanctuary Luang Prabang Hotel – located near key temples and the river, offering an ideal base for participating in or observing this luminous celebration.

8 October – Boat Racing Festival in Vientiane
On the same day as Boun Ok Phansa, the capital city Vientiane hosts the largest boat racing festival in Laos, drawing thousands to its Mekong waterfront. Teams from across the country compete in longboat races that stretch for hours, accompanied by music, markets, and local street food. It’s a high-energy contrast to the more spiritual atmosphere in Luang Prabang.
Where to relax afterward:
Although Sanctuary does not operate in Vientiane, travellers can extend their stay with a tranquil escape to Sanctuary Nam Ngum Beach Resort – located just over an hour from the capital. Enjoy lakeside serenity after the vibrant crowds.
5 November – That Luang Festival (Vientiane)
Held at the golden That Luang stupa in Vientiane, this is one of the most sacred and symbolic religious events in Laos. Over several days, thousands of monks, pilgrims, and laypeople gather for candlelight processions, merit-making ceremonies, and cultural performances. The stupa—believed to enshrine a relic of the Buddha—becomes the spiritual heart of the nation during this time.
Where to find peace after the pilgrimage:
Sanctuary Nam Ngum Beach Resort offers a calm and rejuvenating post-festival experience. Surrounded by nature, it’s an ideal setting for reflection and rest.
